The Key to a National Talk on Encryption Is Frontdoors, Not Legislated Backdoors

Wed, 08/17/2016 - 15:06 by Dave Wagner
Earlier this month, FBI Director James Comey called for a national discussion on encryption and law enforcement’s ability to access encrypted data through a backdoor. Highlighting that the FBI was unable to access 650 encrypted devices, Comey is asking the American public to choose between safety and security. This is just the latest round in what will be a long, long fight about encryption. In recent months, we’ve heard countless arguments. Some support backdoors — allowing government absolute access to any device — while others who oppose them highlight privacy...

The Assembly unanimously voted to force the current administration to implement - by July 0f next year - a response plan for cybersecurity threats to state critical infrastructure. Burr-Feinstein Encryption Backdoor Bill is Dead

Thu, 06/02/2016 - 10:45 by ZixCorp
Over the holiday weekend we’ve been receiving more information about the welcome demise of the Senate Bill sponsored by Senators Richard Burr and Dianne Feinstein, two leading senators on the Senate Intelligence Committee. The bill would have forced U.S. companies to decrypt any encrypted data they may have handled if ordered to do so by a U.S. court. The federal government had not supported the bill, and various agencies such as the CIA and NSA had remained decidedly lukewarm. Libertarian writer Julian Sanchez recently described the draft bill as “the most insane thing I've...

Wed, 05/25/2016 - 15:44 by ZixCorp
We’ve been reading today that the State Department’s independent watchdog has severely criticized former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for using a private email server during the course of her public business. In an obvious rebuke, the State Department Inspector General’s report says that Ms. Clinton’s use of her private server was a violation of State Department policies and practices. According to CNN , the report says a then director of the Office of Information Resources Management “stated that the Secretary's personal system had been reviewed and...

Protecting the Legal Industry from Hackers

Wed, 05/18/2016 - 11:38 by ZixCorp
With the recent rash of alleged hacking attacks against legal firms, it’s become clear that no business type is immune from cyber-attack. As both hacking tools and “hackers-for-hire” multiply and prosper, not only have incidents of alleged hackings increased dramatically, but also the intellectual complexity of the frauds and the prowess of the perpetrators. That is, the hackers are smart and they collect a great deal of information about their victims in order to increase the chances of their success. The risks of data being intercepted in transit across the Internet is...

Survey Reveals Massive Losses in Healthcare Breaches

Mon, 05/16/2016 - 11:09 by ZixCorp
Over the weekend I read this study from the Ponemon Institute revealing that not only have nearly 90% of U.S. health businesses suffered data breaches during these past two years, but also the losses amount to a jaw-dropping $6.2 billion per year. It’s Ponemon’s sixth annual report on the privacy and security of protected healthcare data, looking both at covered entities (CE) and, for the first time, business associates (BA) as defined by HIPAA and section 45 CFR 160.103 of the Federal Regulations . The inclusion of BAs in the Ponemon study is timely: according to David Holtzman...

If you’re a member of the healthcare community, then you’ve probably seen the news: The U.S. Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced that it has rolled out Phase 2 of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Audit Program, which will lead to hundreds of reviews of covered entities and their business associates.
